Venezuelans among the migrants who go on a hunger strike and sew their mouths in Mexico

The objective of these migrants is to reach the United States, so they ask the Mexican authorities to allow them to cross the country to reach the border.

A group of migrants made up mostly of Cubans, Venezuelans and Central Americans who are part of a caravan that formed last Friday, April 1, in the Mexican city of Tapachula, began a hunger strike, as a measure of pressure so that the Government of that country puts at your disposal buses and visas that allow you to travel with ease and reach the border with the United States.

Likewise, another group from the same caravan made up of about 50 migrants, decided to take the measure of sewing their lips with a needle and thread. These people announced that from this moment on, every hour a group of people inside the caravan, the second so far in 2022, will replicate this action.

Venezuela exceeds six million refugees and migrants worldwide, according to data from the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Among them is Edwin Camacho, one of the members of this caravan that travels through America and who have decided to sew up his mouth as a protest measure.

Camacho pointed out that their intention is not to look for problems or generate violence in Mexico, but rather to be allowed to cross through this territory to reach the United States.

For his part, Matías González, who is also a native of Venezuela, clarified that among his plans is not to stay in the North American nation.

The objective of these protest actions is the same, to obtain documents that authorize their legality in the country. Meanwhile, representatives of the caravan began a dialogue with authorities from the National Migration Institute (INM) to allow them to continue on their way after barely advancing about 15 kilometers on their first day.

“We are seeking to speak with the heads of the National Migration Institute and we are going to speak with its head in Chiapas to regularize migrants in this state,” he told EFE Luis Rey García Villagrán, director of the organization Center for Human Dignification in Tapachula.

The official explained that the logistics of the process and the delivery of cards will depend on the migration authorities, in case the migrants are attended to.

Since Friday afternoon, the migrants have stayed in the Álvaro Obregón community park, 15 kilometers from Tapachula, where they are awaiting the decision of the immigration authorities.

The migrant caravan has had two clashes with agents of the National Guard and the city’s immigration personnel.

This caravan has not been allowed to leave the city, and it is because an INM police checkpoint is at the entire main entrance of the community to prevent them from continuing on their way to the United States.

After arriving in the community, the migrants took shelter in the church of the place where, they said, they will remain as long as necessary, while the authorities carried out tours and operations to search for and secure the foreigners who remain hidden in the surroundings of this community.
