The 2022 Paulista Championship cup belongs to Palmeiras for the 24th time in history. This Sunday (3), Verdão thrashed São Paulo 4-0 at Allianz Parque, in São Paulo, in the second game of the decision. Alviverde turned the confrontation, which started with an opposing advantage, due to the triumph of Tricolor in the first leg, last Wednesday (30), by 3 to 1, in Morumbi, also in the state capital.

It was Abel Ferreira’s fifth achievement in command of Palmeiras in just under a year and a half of work, isolating him as the club’s fourth most successful coach. In addition to Paulista, he led the team to a title in the Copa do Brasil (2020), one in the Recopa Sudamericana (2022) and two Libertadores (2020 and 2021). In addition, Verdão prevented São Paulo from equaling it in the number of state conquests.
The first half started hot. At seven minutes, midfielder Danilo kicked the ball with the first shot and the ball exploded into striker Éder’s arm, inside the area. Referee Raphael Claus was called to the video to evaluate the bid, similar to what led to the marking of a penalty – contested by the Palmeiras – in the first leg in favor of São Paulo, but he understood that the member of the Tricolor athlete was retracted to the body and ordered the game to continue.
Verdão kept pressing and scared again at 18, stopping in Jandrei. After cutting forward Dudu’s cross from the right, the goalkeeper saved, with his feet, the firm finish of midfielder Gustavo Scarpa. The insistence was rewarded at 21. After a short corner from the right, Gustavo Scarpa got up and Danilo, with a header, sent it to the net.

Palmeiras followed the lead in the match and extended it in the 27th minute. Midfielder Raphael Veiga received on the right wing and crossed. The ball deflected in the defense and left for the midfielder Zé Rafael to hit the corner. VAR again called Claus to check the bid, understanding that Danilo had fouled forward Jonathan Calleri at the origin of the goal, but the referee upheld the field decision.
Alviverde’s pressure didn’t let up in the second half. At two minutes, Dudu escaped the marking of defender Diego Costa on the right and crossed low for Raphael Veiga, with a cart, to make the third of the hosts.
At a disadvantage in the confrontation for the first time, São Paulo tried to launch an attack, but with difficulties to be dangerous. Palmeiras, on the other hand, were lethal. At 35 minutes, Zé Rafael disarmed midfielder Igor Gomes in the middle and found Gabriel Veron. The striker found Raphael Veiga free to leave Jandrei’s reach and send it to the nets, securing the Alviverde title. In extra time, Tricolor still lost the side Rafinha, sent off.
The teams return to the field in the middle of the week, for the respective continental competitions. On Wednesday (6), Verdão visits Deportivo Táchira (Venezuela) for Libertadores, at 9 pm (Brasilia time). On Thursday (7), at 9:30 pm, São Paulo will face Ayacucho (Peru), away from home, for the Copa Sudamericana.
