The storm that hit Costa Verde on the south coast of Rio de Janeiro, last night (1st) and early today (2nd), also caused deaths and destruction in Paraty.
Six people from the same family died as a result of a landslide that destroyed the house where they lived, according to the Fire Department. The landslide occurred on Ponta Negra Beach and hit seven houses.
The mayor of Paraty, Luciano Vidal, lamented the deaths in Ponta Negra Beach. “Mother Lucimar and five of her children died: João, 2 years old, Estevão, 5 years old, Yasmim, 8 years old, Jasmin, 10 years old, Luciano, 15 years old”.
According to the mayor, a child was rescued alive and sent to the municipal hospital in Paraty. From there, she was transferred to the Praia Brava Hospital, in Angra dos Reis, a neighboring city. In the same landslide, four children from other families were rescued with minor injuries. All are fine.
Vidal asked for help for the displaced. “We mainly need warm clothing, mattresses, hygienic material and basic food baskets to distribute to the affected neighborhoods. We have more than ninety people working to restore security in all places with barriers, but having to deal with the difficulty of access. We ask for patience. In Praia do Sono there were floods, but without any deaths. We are working there too,” said the mayor.
