Venezuela welcomes CHR resolution on the negative effect of sanctions

The Government of Venezuela celebrated this Friday the approval of a resolution presented by the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) before the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), on the “negative repercussions” of international sanctions in citizenship.

The text, approved this Thursday by 27 votes in favor, 15 against and 5 abstentions, is entitled “The negative repercussions of coercive measures unilateral in the enjoyment of human rights” and rejects any sanctions between countries that affect development economicpolitical and humanitarian, or that influences people’s daily lives.

The Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Félix Plasencia celebrated this resolution through his Twitter account, where he expressed his satisfaction with the “firm rejection” to sanctions by the “vast majority” of council members.

“We applaud the adoption, by a large majority, in the UN Human Rights Council, with 27 votes in favor, of the resolution presented by the NAM on the negative repercussions of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights”, the chancellor wrote.

Also, he insisted that sanctions are a “criminal scourge“and that its imposition goes against the principles of International Law and the UN Charter.

“We are the undisputed majority. Venezuela continues to firmly reject the criminal scourge of unilateral coercive measuresalong with 120 member countries of the NAM and other nations of the international community that respect the principles of the International Lawl, multilateralism and the UN Charter,” said Plasencia.

The resolution urges all states to cease sanctions that it considers “contrary” to the “norms and principles that regulate peaceful relations (…) that create obstacles to trade relations and prevent the full realization of rights set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights”.

Furthermore, it urges the sanctioners and the United Nations agencies to “take concrete steps to mitigate the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures in humanitarian assistance”, and urges countries to promote multilateralism and strengthen cooperation to deal with the repercussions of these measures.

United States, European Union and other countries maintain sanctions on Venezuelawith which it prevents, among other things, that it can make use of its assets in sanctioning territory or export and import products on a regular basis.
