DR signs agreement with Atomic Energy Agency

The Minister of Energy and Mines, Anthony Almontesigned an agreement in Vienna with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the use of nuclear applications in areas such as radiation safety to treat cancer, food safety, the environment and energy planning.

The cooperation agreement, called “National Program Framework for the period 2022-2027”, was signed during a ceremony at the headquarters of that body in the company of Mr. Edward Veras, director of the National Energy Commission (CNE), the permanent representative in Austria, Ambassador Laura Faxas and Counselor Flavio Medina.

Signing for the IAEA was Luis Longoria, head of the International Cooperation Division for Latin America and the Caribbean, on behalf of the deputy director general, Mr. Hua Liu, and Eva Ciruana, acting head of the International Cooperation Division, and Karla Molina, managing officer, were present. of Programs for the Dominican Republic.

the deal It consists of achieving cooperation between the Agency and the Dominican Republic on the use of nuclear applications in areas as important as radiological safety to treat cancer, food safety, the environment, energy planning, among other applications for peaceful uses.

Minister Almonte highlighted the importance of signing the National Program Framework, indicating that it is an instrument that serves to identify and strengthen technical cooperation with the Agency, as well as establish an order of priorities to promote issues of national interest on the use of nuclear sciences for peaceful purposes.

Likewise, Almonte, who is a physicist and nuclear engineer, highlighted the fact that since 2013 the Dominican Republic did not have an agreement of this nature.

The IAEA is the international cooperation center of the UN that promotes the use of nuclear technologies for peaceful purposes and in conditions of technological and physical security.

Within the calendar of activities, Minister Almonte and his delegation visited the facilities of the calibration and personal dosimetry laboratories, located in Siebersdorf, Austria.

The agenda included a working meeting with the “International Cooperation Division for Latin America and the Caribbean”, whose welcoming remarks were given by its director, Luis Longoria.

The Dominican delegation also visited this Friday the Wien Energy plant, a large industrial complex responsible for processing waste to produce energy.

Also, the agenda included a meeting of visitors to the General Directorate of Energy and Environment of the Ministry of Energy and Mobility of Austria.
