Colombia will buy 104 thousand tons of Ecuadorian rice

Ecuador will provide Colombia with 104,000 tons of rice during 2022, as announced this Wednesday (March 30, 2022) by the Ministers of Agriculture of both countries during a meeting held within the framework of the thirty-seventh FAO conference for Latin America and the Caribbean, which is being held in Quito.

The export rice from Ecuador to Colombia It will be divided into a first campaign of 62,000 tons that will begin in April and end in June, and a second with 42,000 tons, which will take place between November and December.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Colombia, Rodolfo Zea, explained that imports of rice from Ecuador they will not interfere with Colombian national production, since this is focused on the second half of the year and not so much on the first.

For his part, the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of EcuadorPedro Álava, stated that this agreement reached with Colombia will allow «alleviating the pressure that the rice sector has (from Ecuador) and will help prices improve.”

The announcement was made during the opening day of the thirty-seventh Regional Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which after 73 years is being held again in the Ecuadorian capital to especially address food security .

The Conference will run until Friday (April 1), when it is expected to conclude with a final report containing the conclusions of the debates on aspects such as innovations in small-scale family farming, inclusive rural transformation and agri-food systems adapted to change. climate. EFE
