OAS: Nicaraguan dictatorship "has been irreversibly exposed" with McFields' complaint

Francisco Guerrero, Secretary for Strengthening Democracy at the Organization of American States (OAS), described the Arturo McFields complaint before the body as an “unprecedented event”. The delegate of the regional entity assured that they had not witnessed someone representing a regime take the floor and expose the abuses perpetrated by the administration that appointed him.

Through a video released by the Mexican media Excelsiorthe OAS official recognized the courage of the former Nicaraguan ambassador in denouncing the violations of the rights of Nicaraguans by the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega. “It took us all by surprise,” stressed.

“In the middle of a session of the Council of the Organization of American States, Arturo McFields, the representative of Daniel Ortega’s government at that time, took the floor and suddenly made a political statement that is remarkable. Through his words, the ambassador has recognized, has pointed out that the violation of political rights, the existence of a serious series of violations of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, they are a reality in that Central American country,” he said.

The OAS Secretary for Strengthening Democracy reiterated that McFields’ actions were “unusual” and with his public denunciation he ratified the “serious crisis of human and political rights that occurs in this nation.”

“The Ortega dictatorship has been irreversibly exposed Given this list of issues that Ambassador McFields has made, a situation that must be recognized first as an act of courage, second as a public denunciation; from within the Nicaraguan government itself,” he said.

“With this brave attitude, the ambassador has put on the table a series of situations and circumstances that we already knew about, but that now become more topical; (…) Ambassador Mcfields has acted with dignity and has denounced all the abuses of this dictatorship as we already knew from before », he continued.

Francisco Guerrero encouraged the international community to “take note” of the complaint made by the former Nicaraguan ambassador to the OAS, to work together “so that democracy and human rights return to this Central American nation.”
