Interactive exhibition on the painter Cândido Portinari (1903-1962), the result of 40 years of work by the Portinari Project in partnership with the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS), is on display at the MIS Experience space, in the west of São Paulo , until April 7. The exposure Portinari for All located and cataloged all the artist’s works, in addition to gathering documents and letters that will now be presented to the public in an expanded form.
With technological resources for exhibition and projection, the public will be able to see more than 150 works by the artist, including works in large dimensions or from private collections. “The presence of the original is largely offset by the possibility of taking Portinari in all his dimensions, not only in his pictorial legacy, but also in his ethical and humanist legacy”, says the creator of the project, the artist’s son, João Portinari.
rare experiences
The War and Peace panels, 14 meters high, produced for the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York, will be displayed in full size. Since they were taken to the United States, the works have only returned to Brazil once, between 2010 and 2013, when they were exhibited in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
The immersive experiences will allow contact with the sacred production of Portinari, which is part of private collections or can only be seen when visiting churches, such as the Matriz de Batatais (SP) or in Pampulha, in Belo Horizonte (MG).
The show is divided into thematic axes that will present the various subjects of interest to the painter, such as the social aspect, the dynamics of work, Brazilian fauna and flora, myths and folklore.
Tik Tok Generation
The proposal is not only to show Portinari’s works, but also to offer interactive experiences to visitors. Upon entering the exhibition, people will be invited to take a selfie of their own face. From the treatment with artificial intelligence, the visitor will receive back a portrait in the painter’s language.
João Portinari explains that there is an attempt to bring children and teenagers closer to the artist’s legacy. “If you take the Tik Tok generation, which doesn’t have the slightest approximation with Portinari, maybe they will”, he says in reference to the social network for sharing short videos. The MIS and the Portinari Project thought, according to him, of a series of actions focused on the young public.
up to 1 million people
The audiovisual resources will also allow you to listen to testimonies of great names in the Brazilian arts who had correspondence with Portinari. You may be in front of the portrait of the [poeta] Carlos Drummond de Andrade and, at the same time, listen to him speak”, says João. The interviews are part of the collection that the Portinari Project has collected over the last few decades and help to contextualize the painter’s works.
With the investment in digital languages and the exhibition of this large collection, João hopes that the exhibition will reach a very wide audience. According to him, between 800,000 and 1 million people are expected to visit the MIS by July 10, the last day of the exhibition.
The MIS Experience is located at Rua Vladimir Herzog, 75, in Água Branca. The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Friday and on Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. On Saturdays and holidays, it is open from 10 am to 6 pm. Tickets are free on Tuesdays. From Wednesday to Friday, tickets cost R$ 30, with the possibility of half-price, and on weekends and holidays, the whole ticket costs R$ 45.
