After the referendum on Sunday, March 27, on 135 of the Law of Urgent Consideration, the Electoral Court released the primary data, without counting the 36,080 observed, the “No” to the repeal obtained 1,087,557 votes, to which must be added the 28,747 blank votes. While the option for “Yes” to the repeal reached 1,065,001 votes, so those observed will not reverse the trend.
This Monday, the president of the Broad Front, Fernando Pereira, declared to the press that when the president of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, gave the conference to the president on Sunday night, “he knew that the Broad Front had accepted the result and that the ‘Yes’ commission had not reached the votes to repeal 135 articles of the LUC”.
“I called him. I also called the secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado, before the conference with the president and accepted that we had not reached the votes. When they say they looked for me, it’s true, I don’t answer my cell phone in meetings, I don’t look at it. As soon as I knew that they were looking for me, I called Delgado and accepted the result, that is, when he gave the conference I knew that the Broad Front had accepted and that the Yes commission had not reached the votes to repeal the articles, ”he remarked.
He said that there is a link with Lacalle that allows them to talk. “Having different positions, far from removing dialogue, has to foster more dialogue. The more differences there are, the more dialogue there has to be.”
He stressed that an election has just ended and everyone wants to reflect on their respective organizations. “Clearly we had a very even election, which shows that this law divides Uruguayans.”
We all defend the Police
Regarding the content of Lacalle’s press conference, the president of the FA recognized that he had a “good, careful part, and that must be rescued.” However, he remarked, “A very small part, no, but I prefer not to dwell on the details. We all defend the Police in Uruguay”, in reference to Lacalle’s criticism that the opposition used the Police in the referendum.
“Perhaps we should talk about the Police of the national and Colorado governments in which police officials had no uniforms, no salary, no weapons and worked dozens of 222 hours per month. When the FA government ended, the police had triple their salary, weapons, uniform and a union of 15,000 workers; that is to protect the Police”, compared the president of the FA.
Pereira warned that compliance with the Law violates many rights. That says life. I start from the basis that the laws are applied with greater or lesser severity. There are articles that the government has to review; such as, for example, the one referring to the very high penalties for women, with children, who commit micrographic crime.
Regarding the result of the referendum, he said that the government should pay attention, because the Parliament voted for it with 60% and then, when it had to be ratified, only with 48%”.
