In the fourth quarter of 2021, mortality in the country was reduced 16% compared to the same period in 2020. At this same time, ischemic heart disease (infarcts) were the leading cause of these outcomes.

For experts, this is the result of advances in the control of covid-19 which was the main cause of death in the last two years.
It is noteworthy that when looking at the accumulated mortality of 2020 and 2021 they show covid-19 as the first cause of death in men in the two periods with 33,176 deaths and 55,032, respectively, while this list in women in 2020 head ischemic heart disease (20,484) and already in 2021 this cause was displaced by covid-19, with 36,827 deaths, which demonstrates the devastating effect that the new coronavirus had on the entire population.
Now, the homicides were the third leading cause of death of men in the last two years. On the other hand, for women, this type of aggression does not appear among the first ten causes of mortality.
Along with this, although the covid-19 infection has been responsible for the excess mortality in the 48 months analyzed by Dane, the other lethal diseases they ran their course.
In this sense, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stomach cancer, pneumonia, arterial hypertension, lung, breast and prostate tumors, as well as cerebrovascular diseases continued to be in the first places as fatal triggers when ordered according to the international classification of diseases.

According to health specialist Pedro León Cifuentes, in an interview for EL TIEMPO, covid-19 could be a factor in the development of complications of some diseases due to lack of continuity in treatmentI am afraid of going to a hospital and getting infected.
According to Dane, within the ten leading causes of death so far in 2022, ischemic heart disease ranks first in deaths in men, with 17.7 percent of casessignificantly displacing the group in which both confirmed and suspected covid-19 are found, which appears to be responsible for 17.1 percent of national deaths at the beginning of the year.
