Blockade against Cuba must end as soon as possible, says MEP

Brussels, March 28 (Prensa Latina) Belgian MEP Marc Botenga today demanded the immediate end of the economic, commercial and financial blockade applied by the United States against Cuba, a policy that he considered a violation of human rights.

It must stop so that the Cuban people can follow their destiny and develop the system they chose, the member of the Belgian Labor Party and member of the Left group in the European Parliament affirmed in dialogue with Prensa Latina in this capital.

Botenga described the economic and social consequences of the siege imposed on the island by Washington for more than six decades as absolutely terrible and regretted that President Joe Biden did not fulfill his electoral promise to reverse the policy of his predecessor in the White House, Donald Trump. , or at least dim it.

Trump ordered more than 240 measures to tighten the blockade and its extraterritorial reach, in order to suffocate the island and promote regime change.

With regard to the scope of the aggressiveness of the United States beyond its borders, the MEP rejected the impact it causes on companies from the so-called old continent, persecuted and pressured to trade with Cuba.

The European Union (EU) should assume a stronger position in the face of the blockade, and from here we fight for it to be so, he stressed.

According to Botenga, within the European Parliament there are frequent initiatives and actions to demand the lifting of the siege and ask the EU to act.

We have a friendship and solidarity group with Cuba that exerts pressure in this regard and we ask officials such as Josep Borrell, the high representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, he said.

In a message through Prensa Latina to the people of the island that are resisting the US blockade, he expressed admiration and stated that other countries in the same situation would not have survived.

Likewise, he highlighted the achievements of the Antillean nation in education and health, despite the consequences of that policy, and assured that he will continue in the battle so that Cubans exercise their right to development without such hostility.
