The investigation points to five assembly members who, according to the President’s complaint, asked for benefits in exchange for votes in favor of the Investment Law.
The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), reported on March 27, 2022 that it began a preliminary investigation into the events denounced by the President of the Republic, William Lasso.
The control body indicates that -in accordance with article 580 of the Comprehensive Criminal Organic Code (COIP)– will carry out an objective investigation that brings together elements of conviction, charge and defense that allow deciding whether or not to formulate an accusation.
The Prosecutor’s Office recalled that its actions and those of other institutions involved in a preliminary investigation are reserved character.
At the same time, he called on the citizens so that they can contribute with elements that contribute to the development of this research and thus be able to “prosecute those responsible and prevent the existence of impunity”.

Antecedent
The announcement was made in response to the letter that the President sent to the prosecutor Diana Salazar mentioning the assembly members Edgar Quezada, Celestino Chumpi, Cristian Yucailla, Rosa Cerda and Gisella Molina, as the alleged applicants for economic benefits in exchange for voting in favor of the investment lawwhich was rejected and filed in the Assembly on Thursday, March 24, 2022.
The president also urged the Internal Revenue Service (SRI) and to the Financial Analysis Unit of Ecuador (UAFE), to inquire about the tax obligations of Xavier Hervas, a militant of the Democratic Left (ID) and former candidate for the presidency of the Republic for that political tent in 2021.
