The Geophysical Institute (IG) of the National Polytechnic School indicated that a last tremor occurred at 3:17 p.m. near Esmeraldas, at a depth of 6.81 kilometers.
The GI located this event at 0.92 degrees north latitude and 79.62 degrees west longitude, in a continental sector close to the epicenter of the main earthquake, which was located in the marine-coastal profile.
Shortly after the main tremor, another important telluric movement was recorded in the area, of magnitude 5.1, but more than a dozen with lower magnitudes have occurred.
The most important earthquakes, which have exceeded magnitude 5, have been felt in Quito, where the inhabitants have reported the movement of lamps and curtains.
The collision of the Nazca plate against the continental shelf, which covers most of the coastal profile of South America, generates the phenomenon known as subduction, which is what causes great seismic activity in the area. EFE
