Central Bank concludes the VIII Economic and Financial Week

The central bank of the Dominican Republic (BCRD) finished the 8th edition of the Economic and Financial Week 2022 (SEF) with the awards ceremony for the “Economists of the Future” academic competition, aimed at senior high school students from public and private educational institutions throughout the country.

In the central words of the award ceremony, the governor of the BCRD, Hector Valdez Albizuexpressed that the contest has confirmed the interest of young people in the economy and finances, also showing their responsibility and courage to fulfill their commitments, despite the changes that we have all experienced in our lives, as a result of the pandemic and the global political and social upheavals.

“I congratulate you for your talent and I congratulate the teachers, parents and guardians who accompanied you in this task! I hope that some of you, based on this experience, are inclined to study finance or economics, so that our country continues to add highly qualified professionals in these vital areas for our development and well-being. But if not, at least that they are trained as citizens aware of the importance of these issues and can contribute, from the professions they choose, useful ideas and experiences for the common good,” said the governor.

In this call for “Economists of the future”, the evaluating jury selected eight finalists: Ashton School, Las Américas Educational Center, Amador School, Calasanz School, Jaime Molina Mota School, Cudeni Educational Community, Mercedes Morel Women’s Polytechnic and San Ignacio de Loyola Polytechnic Faith and joy.

Prizes went to the following teams:

First place, with a prize of a 13” MacBook Pro for each student, and 40,000 pesos in cash for the teacher, to the Jaime Molina Mota school, whose members are Yuandry Rodríguez, Massiel Marie Victoria Cortorreal and Paola Idalia Cuevas Ramírez, guided by Professor Hector Rafael Molina.

Second place, with a prize of an iPad Pro for each student and 35,000 pesos in cash for the teacher, for the Mercedes Morel Women’s Polytechnic, in the province of La Vega, whose members are Flor Ámbar Guzmán Ayala, Johanny Eliel Pérez Muñoz and Rosaura Mercedes Cruz Barrera, guided by Professor Jasmín de la Cruz.

Third place, with a prize of an iPad mini and 30,000 pesos in cash for the guidance teacher, for Amador School, whose members are Eugenia Cristina de la Altagracia Guzmán-Desangles Wernisch, Dimarie de Jesús Acosta and Jessica Michelle Ortiz Hernández, being the tutor teacher Nathanael Ureña Castillo.

The jury was made up of Riccio Hermida, Elina Rosario, Angel González, Carlos Delgado and Patricia Pérez, and chaired by Huáscar Jiménez, who spoke a few words on behalf of his colleagues.

The Economic and Financial Week is the most far-reaching activity of the “Central Classroom for Economic and Financial Education” project, belonging to the social responsibility program of the central bank from the Dominican Republic. The event is part of the global economic and financial week of celebration Global Money Weekcoordinated by the foundation Child and Youth International.

35 public and private institutions participated in this edition, offering a total of 60 training activities, through which children, adolescents, young people and the general public were able to acquire knowledge that will contribute to their better development in the personal administration of their resources, received incentives for savings, increased their training in matters that will help them understand the economic development of the nation, thus achieving a palpable boost to financial inclusion in the Dominican Republic.
