A new Smart List is valid until Monday, April 4 and the products recommended by those who make it every 15 days are chili, garlic, apple, quince, sweet potato, lettuce, pear, cucumber and kabutiá squash.

Some of these foods do not exceed $70 a kilo, while others are charged above $200.

These nine products currently have a consumption recommended by the Farmer Observatory, of the Metropolitan Agrifood Unit (UAM).

Pablo Pacheco, a member of the Farmer Observatory, explained that to carry out the Smart List products are selected that “have an abundant presence, with good quality and good price” in the square.

As he pointed out, when selecting the products, it is taken into account that some items, such as fruit vegetables (such as tomatoes or cucumbers), have more price variations than others, such as deciduous fruits, such as apples or pears.

One of the novelties of this new list is the chili, also known as Catalan chili. This product it is the most expensive on the list –according to a price survey carried out by The Observer this Friday-; the kilo costs $212 in supermarkets.

This product belongs to the same family as bell peppers and peppers and is used in gastronomy, generally for its flavor that varies from sweet to spicy; They are also used to make preserves or are prepared on the grill together with the roast.

Chili is the most expensive product on the Smart List.

From the Farmer Observatory they recommend that when choosing them, keep in mind that they are meaty and heavy in proportion to their size, as well as choosing those that have smooth skin, without spots or wrinkles. As detailed by the Smart List, “the brighter their color, the better quality and fresher they are”.

At the other end, the cheapest product on the list is garlic, which costs $30 a unit in greengrocers in Montevideo. This is a product that can last up to six months out of the refrigerator, as long as it is kept in a dark place, according to the recommendation of the UAM technicians.

According to reports from the new horticultural market, in recent years in Uruguay the volume of domestically produced garlic has increased, which is sold in 10-kilo boxes or in bags of loose heads.

Also included in the list are three deciduous fruits such as apples, pears or quincesthree products that are largely produced on farms in the south of the country, located in Canelones and Montevideo.

These three fruits have different prices, depending on the size and type. The kilo of apple can be bought between $50 and $70; while the kilo of pear is offered between $78 and $80; and the quince between $68 and $69. The latter is largely used to make sweets and jams.

Although the fruits come from the same family, their conservation is not the same. The apples are kept in good condition for up to seven days while they belong in a closed container in the refrigerator, the pear is similar, but its duration is between three to seven days in the same conditions. However, the quince lasts up to seven days in good condition outside the refrigerator.

Finally, four vegetables complete the list.

The sweet potatoes –which are sold between $68 and $80 per kilo–.

Lettuce, a product whose consumption favors digestion, improves intestinal transit and facilitates weight loss, has a price that ranges between $50 and $55 per unit, depending on the type. This leafy vegetable has a diuretic and purifying action, according to the Smart List, it is also rich in vitamins A, B, C, D and E, folate, calcium, copper, iron, phosphorus and potassium, and is a very good fiber source.

The kabutiá squash, which is one of the most consumed squashes in Uruguay according to UAM data, costs $80 per kilo.

For its part, cucumbers are sold at $80 per kilo. Greengrocer merchants from Montevideo commented to The Observer that this last product “is expensive”, but that its demand has not dropped significantly.
