"Differences are dealt with at home": parliamentary benches commit in Cerro Castillo to strengthen dialogue between government coalitions

The President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, led this Friday a legislative collaboration and work meeting with parliamentarians and state ministers in the city of Viña del Mar.

The conference, which took place at the Palacio Cerro Castillo, was attended by the ministers Izkia Siches (Interior) and Camila Vallejo (Segegob), and the ministers Mario Marcel (Treasury) and Giorgio Jackson (Segpres), along with the benches pro-government parliamentarians who committed to strengthening dialogue between government coalitions.

According to what was reported by the Presidency, the instance of dialogue and collaboration with the government team sought to “address improvements” in our country and also deal with the internal controversies that have been generated between I Approve Dignity and Democratic Socialism.

For example, in these 15 days of mandate, there have been frictions between senators of the PS and the minister of the Segpres Giorgio Jackson over the issue of amnesty, in addition to the controversy generated by the possibility of a new withdrawal of pension funds —initiative supported by part of the former Concertación, but thrashed by the mayor of Recoleta, Daniel Jadue (PC), who even told the President and his Minister of Finance, Mario Marcel, that it is a bad proposal at this time—.

“Unfortunately, from the left we always put more focus on the differences, than on the things that unite us. The call is to put the focus on the things that unite us and on the things that make us similar, in order to govern together,” he said. President Gabriel Boric addressing those present at Cerro Castillo. The President assured the officials of the ruling party, in this sense, that “there are no first or second category parties.”

The minister spokesperson for La Moneda, Camila Vallejo, agreed with President Boric and emphasized that an eventual union of the coalitions is something that will have to be analyzed later, without pressure and “piano a piano”.

“I have the impression that in a democratic process in the context of four years of Government, we are going to continue to have differences, nuances and different opinions and I am of the idea that the nuances and different opinions must be naturalized. We cannot pretend that in two coalitions, where there are several political parties, where there are several movements, where there are different sensitivities, we all think the same; we are going to continue to have differences, we must naturalize them and accept them and take the measures to reach an agreement”, he said for his Deputy Karol Cariola, head of the PC caucus, part.

“All the benches that have attended this meeting form part of the Government’s support base and therefore we are going to risk everything for the success of the Government”, added the president of the Senate, Álvaro Elizalde (PS) after the Appointment at Cerro Castillo.

Also senator Daniel Núñez (PS) reported that “a phrase that was repeated a lot was first that the discussions should be in private, the differences are dealt with at home, the communications have to be first within the parties, within the coalitions, within the Government, before making it public, therefore it is part of the manual of good political practices that emerged, not to make unnecessary public controversies”.

“There was no request from the Government, but there was a great deal of agreement between the different parliamentary factions on the necessary spirit of collaboration and strengthening of the dialogue between coalitions with the Government and with the parliamentary factions that must exist. We have an enormous challenge in a highly complex and without a doubt we have to give the best of ourselves,” said the head of the caucus of deputies of the Democratic Revolution, Catalina Pérez.

Among the topics that were worked on were also a plan for justice and human rights reparation; the pandemic and back to school; tax agenda; decent job; inclusive reactivation plan; climate crisis and water emergency; feminism, dissidence and care; emergency plan for the housing and city deficit; as well as governance and territories.

“We seek to emphasize the current needs of our Chile to build a positive change in people’s lives,” they specified from the Government.
