Lack of control in the order of the city and its public spaces generates criticism against the Mayor's Office

The occupation of public spaces by merchants is an issue that worries opposition councilors José Alberti and Manuel Saavedra, who They observed that the laws that govern this aspect are not complied with. They made their observations known in an interview with EL DEBER Radio.

For Alberti, this breach is due to the fact that There is a political pact between the Movement for Socialism (MAS) and Solidarity Civic Unit (UCS). He pointed out that the Market Directorate is led by the MAS.

“The political interest is put first over the interest of the city,” he questioned, in time to commit to working on the issue, since he is in the Council’s Markets commission. He also indicated that he has sent several minutes to Mayor Jhonny Fernández so that the Law of Regulation and the Law of Markets are complied with.

Mamén Saavedra condemned that after the Mayor’s Office had spent more than Bs 300 million in the transfer of markets -in the previous administration- the situation continues the same or worse. “It is an economic mafia; millions move and millions a month,” he described.

The Democrats councilor explained that, according to his investigations, a street vendor has to pay the right to sell on the street to his leader, as a monthly rent. That leader, who charges many street vendors, then hands over a portion “to the municipal government, which is responsible for putting order. And why doesn’t he put order? Because it’s good business not to put order”, so, in his opinion, corruption needs to be cleaned up.

Later he mentioned that a stall inside a well-known market costs US$350,000, that stalls in the outside the market pay rents of between Bs 1,500 and Bs 3,000payment made to the leaders.

“The occupation of public spaces in our city is a very profitable for some, who are in charge of bringing order, and empower some leaderswho later end up entering politics,” said Saavedra.

On the other hand, Alberti confirmed the complaint of a listener who sent a message to the radio: the municipality pays water and electricity bills from some markets. And the merchants pay their leaders for these services, arguing that they are the ones who bear those expenses; that is to say, that there is an outlay on the part of the Mayor’s Office, but also on the part of the merchants; The destination of the latter’s funds is not known.

During this week, the Mayor’s Office has carried out various operations to recover public spaces, such as sidewalks. Last Thursday there was a Violent confrontation with appliance vendors from La Ramadawho threw stones, chairs and other objects, at the gendarmes who carried out the confiscation of products that occupied the sidewalk and prevented the passage of pedestrians.

The director of Public Spaces, Ferdy Urgel, at a press conference, indicated that there were officials injured as a result of these attacks and recalled that the Law empowers them to confiscate products that are in public space, without the need for notificationnbut, that Thursday, the officials of his unit made a verbal notification to the offending merchants, who ignored it.
