AN approves Draft Agreement on the occasion of World Water Day

This Friday the plenary session of the National Assembly (AN) unanimously approved the Draft Agreement on the occasion of celebrating World Water Day.

The agreement contemplates that March 22 of each year has been declared by the United Nations Organization (UN) as World Water Day, with the intention that the citizens of all the countries of the world and their respective governments reflect on the importance of water as an essential element of sustainable development and water resources that play a key role in poverty reduction, economic growth and environmental sustainability.

In plenary it was agreed:

First. To urge the National Executive, through the Ministry of People’s Power for Ecosocialism and Water, to design and define a public policy in the area of ​​watershed conservation, capable of guaranteeing the phases of the hydrological cycle and satisfying water requirements, with the in order to contribute to the sustainable development of the country and thus guarantee the human right of all the country’s inhabitants to have access to it.

Second. Urge the National Executive to execute an ambitious infrastructure investment plan aimed at guaranteeing water supply to all regions of the country in accordance with development needs and goals.

Third. Request the National Executive, through the Ministry of Popular Power for Ecosocialism and Waters, to design master plans for the control and management of water quality, based on the basins and hydrographic regions at the national level, in order to improve the quality of the water consumed by the population.

Quarter. To exhort the National Executive to report in detail to the National Assembly on the plans and programs designed to be applied in the so-called National Strategic Development zone, “Arco Minero”, aimed at the mitigation and recovery of the areas affected by mining activity, as well as the mechanisms implemented in the area, in order to prevent adverse effects on the environment and the health of the population, derived from the use of mercury, cyanide and other substances associated with mining.

Fifth. Urge the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic to initiate the investigations that may arise, in order to determine both the quality of the water and the problems in its distribution to Venezuelan homes, establishing the responsibilities of the case.

Sixth. Publicize this agreement.

Given, signed and sealed at the Federal Legislative Palace, seat of the National Assembly of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in Caracas, on the tenth day of April, two thousand and eighteen. Years 207 of Independence and 159 of the Federation.
