About one million Brazilian students are in arrears with their Student Financing Fund (Fies) installments. The federal government, however, has made available renegotiation channels that seek to pay off debts and restore positive credit for those who are negative, that’s what it said today (24), in an interview with the program The Voice of Brazilthe president of the National Education Development Fund (FNDE), Marcelo Lopes da Ponte.
According to Ponte, about R$ 9 billion is owed in unpaid installments. The total debt balance of Fies is R$ 38.6 billion, of which the federal government is trying to recover a part with the new debt settlement program.
Started March 7, the renegotiation journey runs until August 31. To participate, the student must have installments in arrears from 90 days. Discounts range from 12% to 92%, and installment plans can reach 150 installments. Interested students can simulate the new contracts digitally, through the apps from Banco do Brasil or Caixa.
The president of the FNDE also informed that students with a negative name in credit protection services will have their registration restored as soon as they pay the first installment.

According to Ponte, the FNDE has already transferred more than R$ 1.36 billion of the education salary to states and municipalities, which should be invested in school infrastructure, teaching materials and transport for students.
“The education salary is one of the main sources of funding for public education in Brazil. It is up to the local manager to define the best allocation of resources, according to the reality of each network. You can invest in various actions, such as: teacher training, construction, renovation, expansion of schools”, he explained.
Marcelo Lopes da Ponte also explained that the forecast is that the FNDE will annually transfer around R$ 15 billion in education salaries to states and municipalities, which should strengthen primary and secondary education.
