The Fourteenth Guarantee Court of Santiago issued this Thursday preventive detention for Geraldo Salas Rubio, Mauricio Meza Arredondo, Jorge Torres Abayai and Manuel Quezada-Salazar, charged by the Prosecutor’s Office for the crime of qualified homicide. This, for the lynching of a young man in Florida, which ended in his death. The crime was perpetrated in the early hours of Wednesday.
In the formalization hearing (cause role 1,505-2022), the judge Juan Carlos Valdes Penailillo ordered the admission of Salas Rubio, Meza Arredondo, Torres Abayai and Quezada Salazar to the Santiago I Preventive Detention Center, considering that the freedom of the accused constitutes a danger to the security of society, to the victim’s family and due to the risk escape. In addition, he set the investigation period at 120 days.

According to the Public Ministry, at about 00:55 hours on Wednesday, the victim Matias Villarino Waltherwas running down Tiziano Street, in the commune of La Florida, a road on which he was intercepted by an undetermined group of residents of the sector, including the four defendants.
The group proceeded to repeatedly attack the victim with kicks and knees, in addition to immobilizing him and crushing his thoracic, abdominal and neck areas. According to records, he was mistaken for a criminal.
The attacks of the defendants caused the death of the victim, due to a traumatic brain injury and suffocation due to thoraco-abdominal compression, according to the autopsy protocol of the Legal Medical Service.
