The Nicaraguan ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Arturo McFields Yescasdecided this day to stop “remaining silent” and denounced the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo which he called “dictatorship”. McFields took advantage of the body’s meeting to issue a statement protesting that he would be stepping down from office.
He said that, even with fear, he would speak on behalf of “the political prisoners, people who have lost their lives since 2018 and civil and military public servants, forced to pretend, to fill vacancies and repeat slogans” so as not to lose their jobs. The diplomat, who assumed the high position in October 2021, also joined, on behalf of Nicaragua, in condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Louis Almagro, congratulated the ambassador for his “courage and commitment to the values of the OAS” and would have offered him protection. Through a tweet he published that this is the “ethically correct position”. During the plenary, representatives of different countries in the OAS also supported McFields.

The regime preferred to publish a brief statement, through the Foreign Ministry, pointing out that McFields’ statements “have no validity” because “he does not represent them.”
In an attempt to discredit the diplomat’s position, the Foreign Ministry indicated that the person “duly accredited” before the body is Francis Campbell Hookerwho is the current Nicaraguan ambassador to the United States and brother of electoral magistrate Lumberto Campbell.
The dictatorship of Daniel Ortega, through the head of the Second Criminal District Court of Managua, Judge Nadia Camila Tardencilla Rodríguez, convicted the general manager of LA PRENSA, Juan Lorenzo Holmann Chamorro, for the alleged crime of money laundering, he informed La Prensa, Holmann’s wife, Chrystal Munguía.

According to Munguía, the Prosecutor’s Office is requesting a sentence of nine years and four months in prison plus a monetary fine, of which the amount was not specified. Sentencing is scheduled for March 31.

The president of that organization, Kitty Monterey, added that “despite the strict control of the regime that has turned all Nicaraguans into hostages… today they see with hope what yesterday seemed impossible.” For its part, the Renovating Democratic Union (let’s unite) made a “patriotic” call to officials to “abandon and denounce” the dictatorship, indicating that “it is still time to stand by the people.”
European leaders will meet this Thursday and Friday in Brussels to address the war in Ukraine and its consequences. US President Joe Biden will be present at the European Union summit, and Ukrainian President Volodímir Zelenski will intervene telematically. During his stay in Brussels, Biden will pressure his Western partners to approve a new sanctions package.
