SPIA calls for dialogue between Suntracs-Capac to prevail to avoid a strike


Ing. Rutilio Villarreal, president of SPIA, who signs the document, states that a strike would considerably affect the industry in the midst of the country’s economic recovery as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Society of Engineers and Architects of Panama (SPIA), through a statement, called for dialogue between the parties to prevail, in order to avoid a strike announced by the Single Union of Construction Workers (Suntracs) in the construction sector.

They recommend that the representatives of the Panamanian Chamber of Construction (Capac) and the union movement exhaust all channels of communication to achieve consensus regarding the negotiation on the new collective agreement between employers and workers.

Ing. Rutilio Villarreal, president of SPIA, who signs the document, states that a strike would considerably affect the industry in the midst of the country’s economic recovery as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He adds that it is important to maintain peace and order in the country, and recalled that the extraordinary economic measures ordered by the Executive Branch in the midst of the pandemic are still being maintained.

He urged the parties in conflict to resolve the different existing ones in the best possible way to avoid the strike.

Meanwhile, the leadership of Suntracs presented to the Ministry of Labor, a declaration of an indefinite strike that would begin on April 4, 2022, if satisfactory collective bargaining agreements were not reached. To date there are 143 agreed clauses, and 5 in which there is still no agreement.
