Gross debt of the Nation rose to 57.2% of GDP

The Ministry of Finance disclosed the gross debt data of the Central National Government (GNC) to February 2022. According to the information at the end of the second month of the year, it reached $735.15 billion. This implies an increase of 0.67% in relation to the figure for January and a gross difference of $4.9 trillion, compared to the previous month.

Likewise, and when comparing this balance with the one in February 2021 ($640.47 billion), the Nation’s gross debt registered an increase of 14.7% in February, and increased by $94.6 billion.

According to Treasury figures, the composition of the debt in February was $448.46 billion in the case of internal debt, 61% of the total, while the other 39% was external debt, with $286.68 trillions. Internal debt is at 34.9% as a percentage of GDP (projected for 2022), while external commitments are at 22.3% of GDP.

In dollars, the total amount of the Nation’s debt for February was US$187,989 million, of which US$114,679 million correspond to the balance of the internal debt, while the external debt stood at US$73,309 million at the end of that month.

According to the denomination, 61.6% of the debt is acquired in local currency, with the $448.46 billion of internal debt, and $1.1 billion in external debt. Of the total amount of the debt43.2% is in Colombian pesos and 18.4% in Real Value Units (UVR) in Colombian pesos. The remaining 38.4% is in foreign currency, with 34.8% in dollars and 3.6% in euros.

Due to the interest rate, almost all of the internal debt is at a fixed rate, with only $823 million at variable interest. On the side of the external debt, 87.1% of the obligations have a fixed rate, which is equivalent to US$63,856 million, while 12.9% have variable interest, which corresponds to US$9,454 million.

Thus, as of February 2022, 95% of the gross debt of the nation It is with a fixed rate, and only 5% with variable interest.
