Father Edwing Román: "There have always been corrupt judges who sentence innocent people"

Father Edwing Román, former pastor of the San Miguel Arcángel Church in Masaya and currently in asylum in the United States, criticized the judges at the service of the Daniel Ortega dictatorship who have been responsible for sentencing more than 30 political prisoners in Nicaragua.

Through his Twitter account, the prelate from the municipality of Niquinohomo described the courts of the Ortega regime as “corrupt”, incapable of applying true justice.

“There have always been corrupt judges who condemn innocents, such as those of the Sanhedrin (Supreme Court of Jewish law), who are unable to ask for forgiveness and rectify, because they cannot contradict Caiaphas,” compared the Catholic hierarch.

Román joined the general demand of the Nicaraguan people that demands the freedom of the more than 170 hostages of conscience, captives in the different prison systems of the country, as well as in the Directorate of Judicial Assistance, known as the New Chipote, in Managua.

“We demand freedom for the political prisoners of Nicaragua. They are innocent!” demanded the priest, one of the most critical religious voices of the Nicaraguan regime.

The priest left his position as parish priest of Masaya and since August 2021 he resides in the United States. In his place, the Archdiocese of Managua appointed the priest Ramón López.

In addition to the Catholic leader, human rights defenders have demanded that the judges in charge of “imparting justice” work with transparency and not convict innocent people.

For Dr. Vilma Núñez de Escorcia, president of the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh), the actions of the judges of the Judicial Branch “exceeds” the literal interpretation of Laws 1042 and 1055, the Sovereignty Law and the Special Cybercrime Law, respectively. . Both regulations are those that apply against electoral political prisoners.

Núñez assures that the judicial officers are doing “what they want and what occurs to them” and that “they (the judges) are criminals, they are becoming criminals.”

To date, the Nicaraguan regime has condemned the current political prisoners, according to human rights defenders, based on spurious evidence and not allowing a legitimate defense. Family members continue to demand the freedom of all Ortega’s hostages.
