Neighbor tests positive for Covid-19 and is low with Uruguay

Matías Vecino, Inter Milan midfielder, tested positive for Covid-19 and will be absent in the match that Uruguay will play against Peru this Thursday in the penultimate day of the South American qualifying group for the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Lautaro Martínez, Vecino’s teammate, was infected on Monday and is also out with Argentina.

This was reported on Tuesday by the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), which highlighted that, due to this situation, the sky-blue coach, Diego Alonso, summoned midfielder Fabricio Díaz, who plays for Uruguayan Liverpool and was born in Montevideo in February 2003.

Despite the fact that the technical director has not yet given any clues about the starting team, Vecino had great opportunities to be in the eleven, since he was in one of the two games that Alonso has directed since he took over from Óscar Tabárez and because in the next Rodrigo Bentancur will not be able to play due to accumulation of yellow cards.

This Monday the sky-blue squad trained in the afternoon under Alonso’s orders in what was the second of the four practices that the players will do before the first duel. On Tuesday, the players will return to work in the evening hours.

Uruguay can qualify on Friday

After getting two consecutive wins against Paraguay and Venezuela, Uruguay depends on itself to qualify, as it is currently fourth, with 22 points, one more than Peru and three more than its last opponent in the current series, Chile.

For this reason, if Celeste beats the team led by Argentine Ricardo Gareca this Thursday and Chile cannot defeat Brazil, those trained by Alonso will seal their ticket to the World Cup that same day.
