The senator of the National Party Jorge Gandini canceled the debate with the Frente Amplio party Alejandro Sánchez that the Uruguayan Chamber of Television for Subscribers (CUTA) had organized for this Wednesday. The legislator explained through a post on Twitter that “in consultation with the No command” he understood that “the last word must be that of President Luis Lacalle Pou” at the press conference that he will hold earlier this Wednesday.
Gandini thanked Sánchez and CUTA for their “good disposition” in the publication. From the No command, meanwhile, they reported that “all public appearances and/or debates planned for after that instance were cancelled”.
“Unfortunately, the No command has made the decision to suspend the debates. I think it is a very bad decision because ultimately a referendum that will be on Sunday, with a high degree of undecided, the debates provide information, ideas, different perspectives that citizens need to be able to decide. This is going to deprive them of that,” lamented Sánchez in dialogue with The Observer.
The MPP leader maintained that the blocks for the debate had already been defined. “The intention of Yes is growing because people, regardless of their party, do not agree with the express eviction, with the increase in fuel prices every month, and that is what has ended up generating the decision of No, because in them the negative effects of the articles are becoming clearer,” he declared.
The president’s press conference will be the day after the chain of the National Commission for Yes. After criticism from the opposition for breaking his word, Lacalle alleged that the change of date in the conference was due to a request from the promoters themselves of the referendum.
