A new fuel crisis in Cuba is imminent. As announced for Matanzas, the authorities plan to control the sale of fuel throughout the island in the next few hours, according to information compiled by 14ymedio in various service centers in the capital.
“In Havana they haven’t said anything publicly yet,” says a Cupet worker who asks for anonymity, “but it is already said that they are going to regulate the quantities in the establishments.” The same source says that there are small gas stations, “less central”, that are not going to supply, they are going to prioritize the large Cupet and they are going to limit the amounts that can be put into each car, whether private or state.

For now, the fuel is missing in the city. This Monday, the customers in the queue at the Cupet de 23 and the Malecón raised their hands to their heads, desperate, when they found out that there was no more gasoline. Since Saturday, the lines were huge to fill the tanks.
The official press announced on Sunday that the regulated sale of fuel for individuals would begin that same day in Matanzas. The decision, as explained by Geobel Quintero Hernández, a provincial government official, is due to “the existing difficulties in the coverage of these resources in said establishments.”
From now on, only 10 liters of gasoline and 20 liters of diesel will be dispensed in tanks and, directly into the car’s tank, a maximum of 20 liters of gasoline and 40 liters of diesel.
Without giving further explanations, the authorities assure that the limits on sales are not a consequence of a fuel deficit in the country, “but rather that it responds to the logistical assurance for its distribution.”
They also explain that the state-owned company Transcupet, in charge of supplying establishments, currently works with 62% of its vehicles, so that “they must give priority to the diesel needed by the generator sets, which is extremely necessary at the moment due to the crisis. temporary energy that the country suffers”.
Quintero Hernández reported that on Sunday, 34 of the 59 service centers in Matanzas woke up without fuel, but that it is a “temporary problem”: “Once the country’s energy situation improves, service center coverage should stabilize until that we can remove the restrictions.
