In an attempt to avoid police checkpoints, some taxi drivers take migrants along roads that are little traveled in Mexico. One of them was arrested this Sunday, when he stopped in the municipality of Santa Lucía del Camino, in the state of Oaxaca, with seven Cubans, two of them minors.
The driver accelerated when he saw a municipal police patrol, so his path was closed meters ahead, at the height of Lázaro Cárdenas Avenue. Upon getting off the driver, identified as Herculano, said that he was paid to take a family to the center of Oaxaca.
“The accent betrayed the people who came in the car and they indicated that they entered through Chiapas two weeks ago, but they did not present either a humanitarian visa or a QR to certify their legal stay,” he tells 14ymedio Agustín Téllez, from the municipal police, who explained that they were transferred to an immigration station.
The municipality of Santa Lucía del Camino is located about four kilometers from the center of Oaxaca, from where you can connect to Puebla or Veracruz. “This road is a constant transit of undocumented immigrants.” As of February, 5,020 irregular migrants had been intercepted, 13.2% in the state of Veracruz, according to INM data.
The journey is made in cargo trucks, taxis, motorcycles and vans. On March 15, three Cubans died in a car accident. Six days after the incident, the Mexican authorities remain silent on the names of the fatalities and those hospitalized.
This newspaper confirmed that Among the deceased are Anet Patricia Aguilera Canto, 36, and her daughter Anyelina Rodríguez Aguilera, 12. Neither Migration nor the Cuban Embassy in Mexico have offered details about the transfer of the bodies to Ciego de Ávila, nor the identity of the third victim. .

Those hospitalized were offered care and a return to the island, but some of the injured, after receiving medical attention, continued on their way to the border with the United States.
Ailed Díaz, one of the injured young women, underwent surgery due to an injury to her spine. The 25-year-old left on March 1 with the intention of meeting her father, who is in Houston, Texas, told Telemundo. “I only remember that it was mounted on the seat and I don’t remember anything else, until I woke up in the hospital.”
Díaz’s father traveled to Mexico and, to prevent his daughter from being deported, he is requesting support so that they grant her a humanitarian visa and that she not be moved from the hospital where she is.
The passage of migrants through Veracruz has become a constant. This Sunday, the authorities of the municipality of San Andrés Tuxtla intercepted eight vehicles, in which they transported 50 migrants from Cuba, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras and arrested nine coyotes.
In Quintana Roo, the authorities are investigating the origin of a boat with the legend Carlos Roldán Leyva, which was abandoned in Playa Tortuga, in the hotel zone of Cancún, after 11 Cubans made landfall.
