The Minister of Health projected a “slower” increase in Covid-19 cases in the coming weeks, but emphasized that “the pandemic continues”

The Health portfolio updated this Sunday the figures for positive tests and the number of deaths from Covid-19 in Chile. Until 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, 3,392,978 cases of coronavirus were reported nationwide, after adding 10,472 new infections. Of these, 6,172 are symptomatic, 1,771 asymptomatic, and 2,529 unreported.

The variation of new confirmed cases at the national level is -23% and -38% for the comparison of seven and 14 days, respectively. This while 14 regions would have decreased their cases in the last seven days. The downward indicators, however, are not cause for celebration for the Ministry of Health.

In the last 24 hours, 78 deaths were reported according to the DEIS. And to date there are 44,518 deaths associated with Covid-19. In addition, 775 people remain hospitalized in Intensive Care Units, and 612 of them are connected to invasive mechanical ventilation.

Also on the last day, 92,129 tests were carried out, where a positivity rate of 10.79% was produced. To date, 34,702,556 tests have been carried out, with a weekly positivity rate of 13.03%.

“We are seeing in the north that Ómicron reappears, an Ómicron very similar to the one we currently have, but it reappears in several European countries and is beginning to grow steadily,” said Minister Yarza, in an interview with Channel 13.

For this reason, added the health professional, it is key to pay attention to the “false confidence” that the decrease in cases is generating, especially in terms of the relaxation of what Minister Yarza calls “layers of protection”, that is, get vaccinated, maintain physical distance, hand washing, and the use of a mask.

“We think that it is most likely that in the coming weeks (cases) will rise slower than the Omicron we are experiencing now, but it will go up. The pandemic is and continues,” said the surgeon.

Minister Yarza also addressed the protocols for the return to attendance in educational establishments.

It will be seen by unit of class groups and we will place the protection levels there, especially with vaccines, because the criterion continues to be that students are the first to enter and the last to leave, “said the Secretary of State

The head of the Minsal specified that “we are monitoring from the incorporation of children to school and there are more than 1,500 educational centers, which is a huge volume, but the average always hides differences, less than 1% have outbreaks, but in some regions there are more” so that the measures will be adapted to each reality.
