In a statement, Enel, an energy distributor in São Paulo, reported that, upon learning of what had happened, it immediately sent a team to the site, and, after analyzing the open crater, identified an accumulation of gas.

“On Monday morning (2), company technicians identified the presence of flammable gas at the site. The distributor’s teams acted promptly and are still on site to support the recovery of the masonry structure that was damaged by the incident.”

The company also says that it “found that the distributor’s underground electrical network was not damaged by the explosion on Rua da Consolação. It should be noted that there were only power cables at the site and no equipment such as transformers.”

Due to the huge hole left open, the road was closed to traffic which had to be diverted. After repair work, a steel plate was placed at the site, making it possible for vehicles to pass through.
