Seven out of every 10 maternal deaths are Haitian

Santo Domingo.-Maternal deaths in the country so far this year are mainly concentrated in women of Haitian nationality, since, of the 10 deaths registered up to the sixth epidemiological count, seven correspond to this population.

This is indicated by the most recent report from the National Epidemiological Surveillance System (Sinave), of the Epidemiology Directorate of the Ministry of Public Health, so on average 1.6 to 1.7 maternal deaths are reported per week.

The epidemiological bulletin details that, as of February 13, 10 maternal deaths have been reported in the country, which represents a 52% reduction compared to the same period in 2025, when 21 cases were reported.

During epidemiological week 6, a period between February 8 and 13, the province of La Romana reported one in-hospital maternal death.

This is a 48-year-old woman, whose death occurred in a health center in that district.
This case is added to the total accumulated so far this year, keeping health authorities on alert about the risk factors associated with pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.

According to the Sinave report, three cases of maternal mortality were reported in Santo Domingo, while La Altagracia, La Romana, La Vega, Puerto Plata, San Cristóbal, Santiago and Monte Plata had one.

Maternal death is defined as the death of a woman during pregnancy, childbirth, or within 42 days after termination of pregnancy, regardless of the duration or location of pregnancy, when the cause is related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its medical care.
Accidental or incidental causes are not included.

Epidemiological surveillance of maternal mortality is key to reducing the numbers in the Dominican Republic, so, through continuous monitoring, the Ministry of Public Health identifies risk factors, strengthens prenatal and hospital care, and designs strategies to reduce obstetric complications.

Births of Haitian women in public hospitals in the country registered a decrease of more than 50% in January, compared to the same month in 2025, according to official data from the National Health Service (SNS).

According to the report from the Repository of Information and Statistics of Health Services (RIESS), in January of this year, 1,114 births of Haitian patients were recorded, compared to 3,023 births registered in January of last year.
