Táchira reaches a record number of 62 road accidents this weekend

Táchira reached a historical record of 62 road accidents last weekend, according to the balance offered this Monday by the director of Civil Protection in the entity, Yesnardo Canal.

The official expressed his concern about the rise in accidents, which left a regrettable balance of four people dead and 82 injured in just three days. “It is a historical record in the statistics that we have managed in Civil Protection and security agencies during the last four years,” he said.

Canal detailed that at the end of the first two months of 2026, the number of fatalities amounts to 15 people. The most alarming data reveals that 100% of deaths involve motor vehicles, who are the main protagonists in 95% of the incidents reported on highways and the metropolitan area.

The situation has escalated to such a point that local authorities already classify it as a social crisis. «It is a public health problem. “The governor visualized at the Central Hospital the number of injured people filling the emergency rooms and recovery areas,” said the spokesperson.

Despite the awareness campaigns instructed by the regional Executive in municipalities with high incidence such as San Cristóbal, Torbes and Cárdenas, recklessness persists. Canal was emphatic in pointing out that, in the absence of a preventive culture, it is necessary to apply more severe measures.

«Education has not reached the real conscience of these citizens. It must come through the pocket, with fines that raise awareness among each of the drivers behind the wheel,” stated the director of Civil Protection.
