Venezuela and Russia review "progress" of bilateral "strategic cooperation"

The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, denounced on February 5 “open attempts to expel” Russian companies from the Venezuelan market after the capture and extraction of Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores

Venezuela and Russia reviewed this Monday, March 2, the “progress” of their “strategic cooperation,” reported the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Yván Gil, after meeting with the director of the Latin American Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Alexánder Shchetinin, almost a month after Moscow denounced that its companies are under pressure to leave the country.

“We have held a meeting with Alexander Shchetinin, director of the Latin America Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, to review progress in strengthening our strategic bilateral cooperation,” he said on social networks.

The head of Venezuelan diplomacy added that during the meeting both highlighted “the brotherhood and solidarity” that unites both countries and their commitment to the “joint search for a multipolar world.”

On February 5, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov denounced “open attempts to expel” Russian companies from the Venezuelan market after the US military operation in that country on January 3 in which Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured.

In January, the Russian company Roszarubezhneft, a state entity that manages Russia’s oil assets in Venezuela, said in a statement that it will continue to fully comply with its obligations in close cooperation with its international partners.

On February 24, Russia made official the cessation of travel restrictions to Venezuela by reporting that the situation in Venezuela presents conditions of stability that allow the flow of visitors to resume.

Through a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that “at this time there are no obstacles to the travel of Russian citizens to Venezuela,” which puts an end to an alert that remained active for 50 days, after the capture and extraction of Nicolás Maduro by US special forces.

Donald Trump’s administration has intensified its pressure for Venezuela’s interim authorities to terminate cooperation agreements with countries such as China, Russia, Cuba and Iran.
