After going through the recruitment process, women join the Armed Forces for the first time, jointly and voluntarily, through initial female military service.
The Ministry of Defense’s forecast is that, throughout 2026, 1,467 women will perform military service in 13 states and the Federal District, with 1,010 in the Army, 300 in the Air Force and 157 in the Navy. According to the ministry, it will be distributed in a total of 51 Brazilian municipalities.
During a ceremony at the Planalto Military Command, in Brasília, this Monday (2), the Minister of Defense, José Múcio, recalled that, currently, women hold leadership positions in the Armed Forces, carrying out peacekeeping missions abroad, competing and rising to general officer positions.
“This represents the natural institutional evolution, a global trend. A few years ago, women also started to enter military schools, as students, midshipmen or cadets”, he said.
According to Múcio, women represent around 10% of military personnel in the country, totaling more than 37 thousand professionals in the Armed Forces, in specific segments such as combatants, dentists, nurses, doctors, teachers and other technical roles.
“Female entry into initial military service also aligns with the international commitments assumed by Brazil within the scope of the United Nations Women, Peace and Security Agenda, strengthening our credibility and interoperability in international missions, in addition to promoting greater capacity for innovation, adaptability and social legitimacy.”
When directly addressing the incorporated women, the minister concluded: “Know that you make history. The act of volunteerism represents the bravery of Brazilian women. The sobriety and maturity they demonstrate by choosing this path of sacrifice and dedication also increases, within society, the perception of equal opportunities and responsibilities”.
