On February 25, the National Assembly swore in Tarek William Saab and Larry Devoe as ombudsman and attorney general, respectively. Both officials assumed the positions temporarily while the Legislature, through the nominations committee, manages the selection of the people who will hold each position permanently.
After the appointments of the officials, social and political organizations rejected the “castling” and “recycling” in the Attorney General’s Office and the Ombudsman’s Office.
«No to simulations. The country needs to move towards a genuine, credible and transparent re-institutionalization, not a recycling of officials loyal to a structure of impunity. The ‘castling’ of the Ombudsman is an affront to the memory of the victims and an obstacle to justice,” said Óscar Murillo, coordinator of Provea.
