Most of the newspapers of Cuba will no longer have a printed version as a consequence of the economic crisis suffered by the island, aggravated by sanctions and the US oil blockade.
As reported this Saturday by the newspaper Granmathe decision was made by the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (PCC) “in the face of the intensification of the US government blockade” and “the impact on the availability of fuel caused by the Executive Order” on Cuba signed by Donald Trump on January 29.
The measure will come into force from this Monday and contemplates that only the three national newspapers (Granma, Rebel Youth and Workers) will have one print run per week.
These media will be published on Tuesdays, in eight-page format, according to the official note.

The provincials, only on the internet
Meanwhile, the newspapers of the 16 provinces will stop printing and will be exclusively in the digital environment, where in practice they already concentrated most of their work.
The statement points out that these media “will improve their work as multiplatforms, with the permanent updating of their websites and profiles on digital social networks”, in correspondence with “the current international practice of growing access to newspapers via the Internet and the process of digital transformation in Cuban society.”
In addition, “they will strengthen ties with radio and television in order to expand the reach of their content,” says the note published by Granma.
As a measure to promote access to these media, their websites can be accessed “through mobile data for free in the national territory.”
Finally, official information ensures that Correos de Cuba, the entity in charge of distributing printed newspapers to people who subscribe to them, “will adopt the corresponding measures in their contractual relationship.”
