Iris Varela requests to investigate Venezuelans on the “Epstein list”

Iris Varela PSUV

Representative Iris Varela points to people in the business sector who appear in the Jeffrey Epstein records, accused of sexual assault

The deputy of the National Assembly, Iris Varelarequested before the Permanent Commission of Internal Policy of the AN to initiate an investigation and summon for questioning the Venezuelan citizens whose names appear in the records of the deceased financier, accused of sexual assault Jeffrey Epstein.

Varela based his request on the existence of evidence that links at least nine Venezuelans with Epstein’s criminal network.

“The Venezuelan people deserve an explanation of the reason, motives, contracts and activities that these people promoted and allegedly carried out to strengthen the most despicable network of criminals,” stated the parliamentarian in her X account.

Despite Varela’s announcement, journalistic investigations have documented the link between Francisco D’Agostino with Epstein’s entourage. D’Agostino is widely known in the country for being part of the group of businessmen called “bolichicos”who amassed great fortunes through contracts with the Venezuelan State.

D’Agostino’s relationship with the Venezuelan government includes electrical contracts. You are linked directly to the company Derwick Associatesnoted for obtaining multimillion-dollar contracts without bidding with the government of Hugo Chávez for the electrical emergency in 2009, many of which ended in unfinished works or with overprices.

He is brother-in-law of Henry Ramos Allupbut its economic rise occurred mainly in the shadow of energy deals with the State.

In January 2021, the United States Department of the Treasury sanctioned D’Agostino for his participation in a network that attempted to evade sanctions on the Venezuelan oil sector, operating in favor of the marketing of crude oil. PDVSA.

According to emails from 2012, after visiting Epstein’s private island (Little St James), D’Agostino wrote: «After visiting LSJ I see the beginning of a lasting and fun friendship, and the possibility of making money together». In another message, the businessman mentioned his interest in taking Epstein to Caracas to do business.

Although Congresswoman Varela demands justice, so far the Venezuelan State has not opened formal investigations against the businessmen accused of corruption in the electricity sector who also appear in Epstein’s entourage. The parliamentarian’s request raises the question of whether the list of those cited will include figures linked to the economic elite that has operated with the government in the last decade.
