UN High Commissioner calls for the release of all political prisoners in Venezuela

High Commissioner: "The suffering of the Venezuelan people must end"

The high commissioner determined that the state of emergency in the country “must be reviewed to ensure that it respects civic space and human rights.”

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, called this Friday the 27th for the release of all political prisoners in Venezuela who have not yet been released after the amnesty and also for the review of the state of emergency.

“In Venezuela, I note the release of some people who were arbitrarily detained and urge the release of the rest,” Türk said during the 61st session of the Human Rights Council.

The high commissioner determined that the state of emergency in the country “must be reviewed to ensure that it respects civic space and human rights” and stressed that “civil society and victims’ groups must be able to participate meaningfully in public affairs.”

On February 19, the National Assembly, with a pro-government majority, approved an Amnesty Law conceived in principle for cases since 1999, when Chavismo came to power, but which will be specifically applied to 13 “events” that occurred in 13 different years, which excludes the rest of the established period, as well as cases related to military operations.

In this last week there have been 217 releases, but, according to independent records, more than 500 political prisoners remain, which keeps relatives outside detention centers waiting for new releases.
