Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Republic began a new stage in its transit system this February 26, with the delivery of the first broadcast of the new Driver license to the president Luis Abinaderin an event headed by the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (INTRANT).
The activity marked the formal beginning of the new license issuance model, which replaces the previous scheme in force for 20 years, after a process of public tender in which the winner was awarded the Mobility ID Consortiuma company specialized in registration, personalization and secure issuance of documents.
The general public will be able to change or acquire the new format of the document starting March 2 in offices enabled for the first delivery phase.
The executive director of INTRANT, Milton Morrisonstated that the transformation implies a structural change in the control and operation of the system.
“This is not just a change in format, it is the consolidation of a safer, auditable and transparent system, which strengthens road safety and generates benefits for the country without increasing the cost for citizens,” he stated.
Morrison explained that the new model will allow the driver qualification process to be reorganized and expand its social reach.

“With this system we are moving towards more responsible mobility, progressively incorporating more than one million motorcyclists who today do not have a license, strengthening their training and contributing to reducing road accidents,” he said.
Likewise, he highlighted the economic impact of the initiative.
“It is a model that improves the service, expands national and international coverage and, at the same time, generates economic benefits for the country of more than RD$1,000 million,” he pointed out.

Technology and reinforced security
The new license is made of high-security polycarbonate, personalized with laser engraving and incorporates microtext, holograms, invisible inks and UV printing, raising the levels of protection against counterfeiting.
The system integrates advanced biometrics (ABIS) to validate the driver’s identity and establishes a single centralized history with auditable records. Additionally, they implement theoretical exams and digitalized practices, with objective and verifiable processes that reduce discretion.
In a second phase, scheduled in the next 60 days, the Digital Driver’s License (mDL) will be integrated, aligned with the international standard ISO/IEC 18013-5.
National and international expansion
The plan contemplates the opening of new offices in provinces such as San Cristóbal, Monte Cristi, Espaillat, Dajabón, Elías Piña, Santiago Rodríguez, Monte Plata, Independencia, Pedernales, Monseñor Nouel, Sánchez Ramírez, San Pedro de Macorís, San José de Ocoa, El Seibo, Salcedo, Samaná, Hato Mayor and Bahoruco.
Abroad, offices will be added in New Jersey, Barcelona (Spain), Puerto Rico, Brussels (Belgium) and Zurich (Switzerland), in addition to new GOB Points in Santo Domingo Este (Expreso), Santiago and Santo Domingo Norte (Central Hill).
INTRANT clarified that citizens whose license has not expired are not obliged to change it, although they may voluntarily request the new version.
With the symbolic delivery to the president, the country formalizes the implementation of a system that promises greater security, transparency and state control in the management of mobility.
Starting Monday, March 2, the service will be available to the general public in the following offices enabled in the First Phase:
