The titular member of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) and coordinator of the Commission of Electoral Boards and Parties, Groups and Political Movements, Samir Chami Isaconsidered that it is dand “an internal activity” the process of choosing a candidate for the presidential candidacy of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD).
“Practically, it is an activity that is being done in a single location. The Board is going to provide the equipment; it is their own activity, but it must be clear that this is not binding for the electoral process in the future,” Isa stated.
“This means that, if in that party any member of that party wants to propose his candidacy, the party will have to make decisions at that moment,” he added. The magistrate acknowledged, however, that “it is a delicate issue.”
He recalled the decision of the Superior Electoral Court, through ruling TSE/0011/2025, which indicates that during the period between the end of an electoral process and the formal start of the next, any promotion of pre-candidacies or candidacies is prohibited.
When interviewed on the Uno+Uno program, on Teleantillas, he pointed out that the JCE works hand in hand with political organizations to avoid untimely proselytism. Despite this, he admitted that greater strengthening of electoral legislation is needed.
In that order, he also recalled that, so far, “there is no candidate”, so there cannot be a financial sanction and the inadmissibility of the candidacy.
The PLD agreed, within its Political Committee, to preselect a list of presidential candidates as a mechanism to improve its position with the electorate and with a view to 2028.
