Ministry of Women and allies conclude national consultation on women's rights

More than 200 women from civil society gathered this Wednesday morning in what was the last meeting of the National Consultation for the Preparation of the Country Report that the Dominican Republic will present at the 70th session of the Commission on the Legal and Social Status of Women (CSW).

The process, promoted by the Ministry of Women, together with the United Nations System in the Dominican Republic and the Embassy of the United Kingdom, brought together representatives from different sectors and territories of the country with the objective of collecting direct contributions that allow reflecting the progress, challenges and national priorities in relation to the guarantee of women’s rights.

At the event, the minister of the Ministry of Women, Gloria Reyesstressed the importance of the country report being based on the voices and realities of women in the territories, as a basis for strengthening public policies.

“We are building a country position that reflects our progress, but also the structural challenges that we must face to guarantee access to justice, economic autonomy and a life free of violence for all Dominican women,” Reyes added.

For her part, the coordinator of the United Nations System in the Dominican Republic, Julia Sanchezhighlighted that for this year the central theme of the CSW is the guarantee and strengthening of access to justice for both girls and adult women, through the creation of equitable legal systems.

“We must identify the barriers that prevent women from accessing effective justice and strengthen the institutional response to ensure immediate and forceful actions against the violation of their rights,” said Sánchez.

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), a functional body of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), constitutes the main intergovernmental space for the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls at a global level.

For CSW70, the 2026 priority theme focuses on ensuring and strengthening access to justice for all women and girls, by promoting inclusive and equitable legal systems, eliminating discriminatory laws, policies and practices, and addressing structural barriers that limit the full exercise of their rights.
