Dredging and signaling bring Cerro Largo closer to a new stage of development in Laguna Merín

Next March 3 and 10 will be key days for the productive future of the east of the country and, especially, for Cerro Largo.

On those dates, bids will be opened to carry out the dredging and signaling tasks that will make possible the navigable connection between Laguna Merín and Laguna de los Patos, through the São Gonçalo Channel.

The completion of this work represents a historic expectation for the region. In Cerro Largo, the impact is projected directly on the Cebollatí River and the entire basin linked to Laguna Merín, a strategic point for the movement of cargo and border integration.

On the Brazilian side, the initiative also involves Santa Vitória do Palmar, strengthening the binational axis on the border with Chuy.

The central objective of the project is to consolidate an efficient waterway for the transportation of goods, reducing logistics costs and generating new opportunities for the productive sector.

Producers, businessmen and departmental authorities are closely observing this process, aware that a fully operational waterway could boost the local economy.

However, the projections are not limited only to the transfer of loads.

If the works are completed and navigability conditions are maintained, the possibility of incorporating ferry services and promoting binational tourism will open in the medium term, strengthening the link between Uruguay and Brazil through water.

This is a long-announced project that is gaining momentum again and could mean a turning point for Cerro Largo and the entire area of influence of Laguna Merín, consolidating the region as a strategic corridor for productive development and regional integration.
