What caused Monday's blackout? What is known so far

The minister of Energy and Mines offered an update on the blackout that affected much of the country last Monday.

During an interview on the Sol de la Mañana program, the minister revealed that “an explosion” caused the switch on the 138 kilovolt (kV) Hainamosa-Villa Duarte line to trip.

He clarified that there was no human intervention at the origin of the event, as happened with the blackout of November 11, 2025.

The authorities of the electricity sector reported that the National Interconnected Electrical System (SENI) was 100% restored at 11:53 pm this Monday, after completing the replacement process initiated after the incident recorded on Monday morning.

Santos said that technical investigation procedures are activated to precisely determine the causes of the initial event and that the results will be communicated in a timely manner, through official channels.
