Cuba registered two new deaths from chikunguya in January, according to PAHO

The Government of Cuba recorded two new deaths from chikunguya last January, according to data published this Tuesday by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

The Cuban Ministry of Public Health (Minsap) stopped publishing figures on the dengue and chikunguya epidemic at the end of 2025 and PAHO had not published data on Cuba this year so far.

PAHO, which is based on official data provided by the island’s authorities, reported 1,457 cases of chikunguya between January 1 and 31.

On the other hand, Cuba is one of the few countries (along with Venezuela, Nicaragua, Guatemala and other smaller countries, mainly Caribbean islands) for which there is still no data on dengue cases in 2026 in the PAHO public databases.

According to EFE, The last time the Cuban Government referred to the dengue and chikunguya epidemic was on January 28, when it stated without providing any figures that the number of cases had decreased during the previous three weeks.

The Vice Minister of Public Health, Carilda Peña, then indicated, in the framework of a meeting to monitor the epidemiological situation, that the numbers of cases of the two arboviruses were “in the safety zone.”

The Cuban Government recognized for the first time on November 12 of last year that the country was suffering from a chikunguya and dengue epidemic, although at no time did it declare a health emergency or officially request international help.

Cuba reports a 29.3% decrease in dengue and chikungunya after the epidemiological crisis

However, the first cases of chikunguya were diagnosed in July and infections of both arboviruses skyrocketed in September and October, straining the health system and with evident social and economic repercussions.

Havana made a request for international aid at the end of October due to the passage of Hurricane Melissa through the eastern end of the island, which included large quantities of chemicals to combat the mosquitoes that transmit these two diseases.

For all of 2025, PAHO counted 65 deaths in Cuba from dengue and chikunguya (more than half minors) and a total of 81,909 infected.
