US 15% global tariff is good for Brazil, says Alckmin

US 15% global tariff is good for Brazil, says Alckmin

The acting president and Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, commented again, this Sunday (22), the impacts of new global export tariff announced by the United States (USA) government, of 15%, on exports from all countries. He compared the new rate with the previous situation, in which the tariffs charged by the US were specific according to the country.US 15% global tariff is good for Brazil, says Alckmin

“It’s deniable, even with 15% you gain more competitiveness in everything. We were at 50% [de tarifas] in many products, and competitors with 10% or 15%. Now, everything remains very the same and in some sectors we are left with zero. As I highlighted here, plane, bus, aeronautics, orange juice, cellulose, there [tarifa] zero”, Alckmin declared to journalists after participating in the launch mass of the Fraternity Campaign, this Sunday (22), at the National Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aparecida, in Aparecida (SP).

According to the acting president, the exemption is especially relevant for the Brazilian aeronautical industry, which depends on the foreign market to maintain scale and competitiveness. Alckmin recalled that, even with the so-called “tariff”, Brazil registered record exports last year, with US$348.7 billion, a result attributed to the diversification of markets and the expansion of trade agreements.

He cited as recent examples Mercosur’s advances in negotiations with Singapore, countries of the European Free Trade Association – Efta (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland), in addition to the importance of President Lula’s international agenda to strengthen strategic partnerships, such as with the United States and India.

For Alckmin, expanding markets is essential for the national industry.

“Industries, if they don’t export, won’t survive. Export means employment and income here,” he concluded.

Last week, a decision by the Supreme Court of the United States deemed tariffs previously imposed by President Donald Trump based on emergency powers illegal. By six votes to three, the Court understood that the creation of tariffs is the prerogative of Congress, and not the Executive.

The judgment annulled a relevant part of the so-called tariff, through which the Trump administration had imposed a global tax rate of 10% and an additional surcharge of 40% on Brazilian products, totaling 50% in some cases.
