Freddy Superlano will receive full freedom after eleven days under house arrest

Freddy Superlano

Silva de Superlano published a statement on her Instagram account in which she indicated that she was notified that the document that makes her husband’s full freedom official will be delivered shortly.

Former opposition deputy Freddy Superlano will receive full freedom in the next few hours, reported his wife, Aurora Silva de Superlano, after serving eleven days under house arrest in Barinas, in the context of the releases that derive from the approval of the Amnesty Law for Democratic Coexistence in Venezuela.

Silva de Superlano published a statement on her Instagram account in which she indicated that she was notified that the document that formalizes her husband’s full freedom will soon be delivered. “Given the releases that are taking place in our country, I want to inform you that I have been notified that in the next few hours the document will be delivered granting full freedom to my husband Freddy,” she wrote.

The wife of the former parliamentarian added that, like thousands of relatives of political prisoners, she is waiting for this and all the releases contemplated in the regulations to occur “so that the country can move towards true reconciliation.”

Superlano had returned to his home in the early hours of February 9 under house arrest after spending 18 months in detention, in what his party and human rights defenders described as unjust imprisonment after his arrest on July 30, 2024, in the midst of the repression unleashed after the presidential elections of that year.

At the time, Superlano celebrated his partial release on social media and wrote that after almost a year and a half behind bars he had been able to reunite with his family, while asking for prayers that all political prisoners would be released “in the next few hours.”

The Amnesty Law, approved by the National Assembly dominated by the ruling majority, has been the framework for an extensive wave of releases of political leaders, activists, communicators and others detained for reasons linked to political activity. The legislation stipulates specific criteria for applying the amnesty, which has generated debate about included and excluded cases.

The implementation of these measures occurs in the midst of a broader political process that seeks to address demands for the release of prisoners for political reasons and move towards what the authorities have called a climate of democratic coexistence, even in the midst of criticism from human rights organizations for the deadlines and conditions of implementation.

Until now, no official schedules have been detailed regarding the additional releases provided for in the regulations, nor specific figures of the total number of beneficiaries who will be released under the new legislation.
