The Cuban Ministry of the Interior confirmed this Friday that the day before “it restored order with rationality and determination” in the Canaleta high-security prison in Ciego de Ávila, where a riot occurred on Thursday.
In a brief statementthe Minint assured that the facts —did not go into details about what happened—occurred when two prisoners “along with other inmates” committed “a serious violation of prison regulations.”
The Minint, however, did not clarify whether there were injured or deceased prisoners, as several organizations and media outlets warned.
This is the first time that the Cuban Government refers to the Canaleta mutiny, widely denounced the previous day by NGOs and activists.
In the note, the Ministry of the Interior warned that “events like these” will receive “the rigor of socialist legality for the benefit of collective security.”
A testimony from an inmate in this prison provided on Thursday to EFE He assured that police reinforcements have arrived at the prison, who are using “rubber bullets,” “pepper gas” and physical violence to contain the riot.
Regarding the reasons, the testimony speaks of “hunger” and “mistreatment” in prison, as well as discontent with the Cuban Government.
