Cubans in Washington demand that the EU cut funds to the regime

Activistas y opositores en el exilio frente a la embajada de la UE en Washington

LIMA, Peru – A group of activists and opponents in exile together with representatives of the Assembly of the Cuban Resistance (ARC) They demonstrated this Saturday in Washington in front of the Embassy of the European Union (EU) for the end of support for the Cuban regime.

Along with slogans and posters for the freedom of Cuba and the release of the more than a thousand political prisoners in the island’s prisons, the protesters asked the EU to stop sending money to the dictatorship, a source of oxygen used for the repression of citizens.

“This financing does not end in the hands of the Cuban people (…) It continues to allow a brutal dictatorship that has imprisoned and enslaved our Cuban nation for the last 67 years,” declared Allan Collazo, executive director of the Cuban Freedom March organization.

The young man highlighted the need for the European Union to practice what it preaches in its speech on democracy and human rights, cutting off financing of millions of euros and support for the Castro tyranny that has expanded for nearly 30 years.

Collazo also denounced the EU’s complicity with a regime that promotes the destabilization of its own territory and highlighted Havana’s role in sending thousands of mercenaries to Ukraine to support Vladimir Putin in his military operations against that country.

“Being Cuban is an essence, it is a legacy, it is a tradition. I feel more Cuban than ever. And, unfortunately, what our Island is going through is not right. No one should have to go through that. And I think we have to speak (…) to ensure that one day we see a free Cuba,” highlighted Lina Luaces, current Miss Cuba and who extended the claim with the help of her mother, the model and presenter Lili Estefan.

“We are never going to abandon our brothers inside the Island and we are going to continue here. It does not matter, we do not sleep. Just as the communists do not sleep, we are not going to sleep, because the transition to democracy is coming,” stated Kiele Alessandra, founder of the Youth of the Resistance coalition from the ARC.

The demonstration in front of the diplomatic headquarters also had the presence of consecrated figures of exile such as Johnny López, from Brigade 2506, as well as members of the Federation of Cuban Masons and Alexis Calatayud, senator for the state of Florida.

“It is a shame that the European Union is still helping that criminal regime that has destroyed a Cuba that was precious. Today we are here to denounce, to stop the excess and take away the money they are sending,” said López.

“I am the granddaughter of two Bay of Pigs veterans. I know the stories I grew up with and I know the loss of generations. I want to be the voice that says: ‘We remember.’ We can only do everything we can to be their voice (of the Cuban people) in the United States and ensure that not a day goes by without the complicity of the European Union or any Western power being condemned,” Senator Calatayud stressed.
