Apartments in Panama and a daughter who travels the world: the luxuries of the head of GAESA

Ania Guillermina Lastres Morera / Any Rodríguez Lastres

LIMA, Peru – Any Rodríguez Lastres, daughter of Brigadier General Ania Guillermina Lastres Morera, head of the business-military conglomerate GAESA, resides in Panama, where she has developed her career in the port and logistics sector, according to records and sources consulted by Martí News.

Rodríguez Lastres began his career at the Mariel Container Terminal, one of the main logistics and industrial projects in Cuba, where he worked since 2014 in commercial areas and later in strategy and market research. Graduated from the University of Havana, the young woman participated in budget preparation, cargo acquisition and analysis for decision-making within the port.

He later joined international companies in Panama, a country to which trips to various destinations in Europe, Latin America and Asia are also linked.

Rodríguez Lastres represents another example of privileges associated with relatives of high officials inside the leadership on the Island. While the Castro regime appeals for the “creative resistance” of the people and asks for sacrifices from the official discourse, the children, grandchildren and other people close to power live among luxuries, trips and excesses.

The young woman’s rapid rise is linked to her mother’s role within GAESA, a conglomerate that controls key sectors of the Cuban economy such as tourism and foreign currency trading. Brigadier General Ania Guillermina Lastres Morera took center stage within the military emporium after the death of its previous leader, Luis Alberto Rodríguez López-Calleja.

According to sources cited Martí NewsLastres Morera is also listed as the owner of a company with several apartments in Panama, where her daughter currently works.

“There you see the privileges of this new caste (…) How many Cubans have the right and the ability to travel the world as the daughter of a government official?” questioned Luis Domínguez, researcher at the Foundation for Human Rights in Cuba.

It should be remembered that already in 2019 an extensive report published by Cubanet He had documented the life of ostentation and without restrictions of families linked to the Castro military class. The text revealed frequent trips abroad, exclusive residences, access to goods and services prohibited to the rest of the population, as well as the systematic placement of children, grandchildren and other relatives in strategic positions within state companies and military conglomerates.

That investigation also pointed out how these family networks operate under a strict cloak of secrecy, protected by the absence of institutional transparency and by a power structure that deliberately confuses the public with the private, confirming that the regime’s egalitarian discourse coexists with a hereditary elite that enjoys an authentic “dolce vita” in the midst of the country’s collapse.
