AN active agenda of meetings and dissemination of the Amnesty Law

AN active agenda of meetings and dissemination of the Amnesty Law

The first vice president of the National Assembly (AN), Pedro Infante, announced the next meetings to be held by the Special Commission for Monitoring the Amnesty Law formed by Parliament, in order to give effect to the legal instrument.

“Today a meeting was probably proposed on the agenda with the Ministry of the Interior, Justice and Peace,” Infante said during an interview on the 360 program on Venezolana de Televisión; Furthermore, he pointed out that this entity is essential because “it connects with law enforcement.”

The agenda also includes meetings with other instances of the Executive Branch, the Public Defense and various auxiliary justice bodies to “continue reviewing the implementation” of the measure.

After the publication of the instrument in the Official Gazette, the parliamentarian reported that a “protocol for the expeditious application of this Law” had already been activated, which began with a first working table, where Attorney General Tarek William Saab, the president of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), Caryslia Beatriz Rodríguez, and members of the Special Commission for Monitoring of the Law were present.

Dissemination schedule and response times

As a central part of the work axis, the Legislature will begin an information display so that the population knows the mechanisms of the norm.

“We are scheduling a campaign to disseminate the law starting on February 23 and we will continue working to democratize information on this issue,” Infante said, emphasizing that the objective is to move forward “as quickly as possible.”

The first vice president of the AN emphasized the importance of the legal times established in the institutional agenda. “The law establishes certain times, it establishes 15 days from the moment the interested party makes the request for their case within the amnesty law,” he explained.

In this sense, the current technical meetings seek to ensure that the State is ready to process requests efficiently.

Case review and systematization

The agenda also prioritizes detailed analysis of current files to determine who qualifies according to the legal text.

«What is the route of the Amnesty Law? Review the cases (…) seeing, understanding the exceptions,” said Infante.

He also clarified that the first objective is to “guarantee compliance with the Amnesty Law; “There are people who have already been prosecuted.”

The deputy recalled that this operational work is the closing of a consultation process where “more than 2 thousand proposals were received” from universities, law firms and NGOs.

Infante concluded that the goal of these meetings is to take advantage of this “golden opportunity” for the country, ensuring that the team will remain in permanent session, since “cases will surely reach us” in the coming days.

Against extremism and forgiveness

Infante reflected on the need for this law for national stability, pointing out that “extreme positions have harmed the country and I know that the vast majority of our people want peace (…) no one wants violence or the promotion of hatred.”

In this sense, he stressed that the amnesty is granted by the State to those who “made the mistake”, but without forgetting the victims.

In this regard, he cited the words of Jorge Rodríguez during the presentation of the law, reaffirming that “we must ask for forgiveness and learn to forgive.”
